For some time the Friends have been interested in bringing back some of the earlier features of the park.
When the cloverleaf field was developed in the 1920’s, stairs were built to ascend some of the newly raised areas, urns were installed on the upper plinths and flower beds were planted along side stairs.
By the late 1970’s the urns had fallen into disrepair and were removed, and the flower beds converted to grass.
To add interest to the cloverleaf field, the Friends decided to look into bringing back the urns, which would be filled with plants, as well as reinstating some of the bedding along the stairways.
In October 2022, the Friends created a new flower bed along one stairway.
Finding urns of the right look, size and of course price, took almost a year but eventually we found a set that looked great, and also met with approval of the Council greenspace and conservation officers.
In January 2023, 8 urns were installed and planted up with heather and Helleborus. In addition, the somewhat industrial handrail on one set of stairs has been replaced with one in more keeping with the park’s design.
